Essay Analysis:
Your essay will discuss all the movement patterns performed in the filmed athletic movement
and will be divided into the following four phases of the movement:
• Preparation (wind-up)
• Force Phase
• Critical Instance/“Contact”
• Recovery (follow-through)
Within each of the categories you must address the movements (i.e. flection, extension,
abduction, etc.) that occur in the following skeletal system joints/body segments:
• Ankle (bilateral)
• Knee (bilateral)
• Hip (Bilateral)
• Torso/Spine
• Neck/Head
• Wrist (bilateral)
• Elbow (bilateral
• Shoulder (bilateral)
In addition to the skeletal system categories above, you must also discuss the skeletal muscles
responsible for the movement being created. Within the muscle discussion you must include the
activation of each muscle (i.e. isometric, concentric, eccentric) along with the physical change of
the muscles. Your essay must be written in complete sentences and provide full analysis of the
action.
The Essay must conclude with an evaluation of the movement. For example, are there
restrictions within the movement that should not be occurring; if so, what is causing them? How
does the use of an implement impact the movement? How would changing the
implement/equipment in some way (size, weight, etc.) change the movement? How do
environmental factors impact the movement pattern?
