You are to watch the film “Dream Deceivers: The Story Behind James Vance vs. Judas Priest.” Watch this film and write an 8+ page paper, worth 20 points. What is your reaction to the film? What did you learn about crime and the media from this film? Do you agree or disagree with the basic ideas of the film? One of the issues we will discuss in this class is the relationship between the media and crime. What is nature of this relationship? Does media exposure “cause” crime? Probably not. However, does media exposure teach bad behavior? Does media “trigger” behaviors in some way? Does media change values or behaviors? These are difficult issues to sort out, but it is foolish to believe that there is no relationship. This is an older documentary, but one of the best on the subject. Here are two fans of the rock group “Judas Priest.” Once they became “metal heads” their behaviors changed. They changed the way they dress, act, and behave. Eventually they attempted suicide, stating they were compelled to do so by their music heroes. Please analyze this film. What was the cause of their behaviors? How did the music influence these kids? Why was the family so quick to blame the music group? Does the media, in general, contribute to our violent society? If so, how? Here are some questions you may consider: What is the ethical issues identified and the “crime” committed? Could you argue that the behaviors involved are not crimes? Who are the perpetrators, victims and other interested parties? How do class, power, privilege and hierarchy play a role in the story? Of what significance are social psychological, organizational, cultural and social structural factors important in the story? Is there a crucial point of moral decision making, a “point of return?” How do the requirements of frantic presentation distort the actual nature of the problems explore? What is the resolution of the problem in the story? Is justice done? would you rewrite the story to better represent your own views/values?
