but please use different articles.
Choose your topic and do an Internet search for an article or articles on it. You can also use the List of Interesting Websites. If you can find logos, ethos, and pathos in one article, that’s great, but you can use two or three if you need to. However, all the articles should be on the same topic.
Articles that strictly report facts (such as an encyclopedia entry or unbiased news report) will not work well for this assignment. You need to choose articles expressing a writer’s or writers’ point of view.

Paragraph One: Introduction.
Paragraph Two: What is the article about? Briefly summarize it for me.
In the New York Times article “Why Rural America Voted for Trump,” Robert Leonard paints a deeply sympathetic picture of the daily lives of rural Americans, with their disintegrating roads, distant healthcare, and economically dying, jobless towns. He explains how their feeling forgotten and abandoned by the leaders of our country led to them voting for President Trump (2017).
Paragraph Three: Find a direct quote that is an example of logos and tell me why it is a good example of logos.
Leonard argues “Look at a national map of which counties went for Democrats and which for Republicans: Overwhelmingly, the blue counties are along waterways, where early river transportation encouraged the formation of cities, and surround state capitals. This is also where most investment in infrastructure and services is made” (2017). This is a good example of logos because…
Paragraph Four: Find a direct quote that is an example of ethos and tell me why it is a good example of ethos.
Leonard describes his 2015 encounter with J.C. Watts, a Baptist minister. Mr. Watts describes what he sees as the most important difference between the ethos of Republicans and the ethos of Democrats:
…Republicans believe people are fundamentally bad, while Democrats see people as fundamentally good….We are born bad…children do not need to be taught to behave badly – they are born knowing how to do that. We teach them how to be good….Democrats believe that we are born good, that we create God, not that he created us. If we are our own God, as the Democrats say, then we need to look at something else to blame when things go wrong – not us. (2017)
This quote from Mr. Watts is a good example of ethos because…
Paragraph Five: Find a direct quote that is an example of pathos and tell me why it is a good example of pathos.
Leonard describes the attitude of two 18-year-old men he has known since their childhood: “[They view] liberals as loathsome, misinformed and weak, even dangerous.” “Let’s go to work,” one says to the other as he finishes his coffee. “Let the liberals sleep in” (2017). This quote provides a good example of pathos because…
Paragraph Six: Conclusion
References: Using APA Style, list your article or articles on your References page. Use in-text citations for your quotes.
Expected length: 6-8 paragraphs but meeting the assignment requirements is more important.
Points: Content = 70 pts. Grammar = 20 points. APA Style = 10 pts (100 total).
Of the 70 points for content,
• 5 points for the introduction, 5 points for the conclusion
• 15 points for the article summary
• 15 points for identifying an example of logos and explaining why it is logos (on what kind of factual evidence is it based? Is a subject matter expert quoted? Primary research cited? A direct, real-world analogy presented?)
• 15 points for identifying an example of ethos t and explaining why it is ethos (Are both sides of the argument considered? Is a concession made? Is the author appealing to a certain moral code or way of life, speaking to a certain audience? Calling for action?)
• 15 points for identifying an example of pathos and explaining why it is pathos (is the author engaging their own emotions to invoke emotions in the reader? Are they using figurative language to create an image in the reader’s mind? Are they using loaded language?)
Please see the in-class handout for more examples.

This second writing assignment is a good time to begin research on a possible final paper topic. However, this assignment and WA-3 can be about any topic you choose. They do not have to be on your final paper topic (but they can be. Make sense?)
Choose your topic and do an Internet search for an article or articles on it. You can also use the List of Interesting Websites. If you can find fact, opinion, and belief in one article, that’s great, but you can use two or three if you need to. However, all the articles should be on the same topic.
Articles that strictly report facts (such as an encyclopedia entry or unbiased news report) will not work well for this assignment. You need to choose articles expressing a writer’s or writers’ point of view. New York Times editorials would be a good choice for this assignment but are not required.

Step One: INTRODUCTION
Step Two: ARTICLE SUMMARY. What is the article about? Briefly summarize it for me. Notice the use of quotation marks, italics, and end citation below.
The SOURCE goes in italics. The ARTICLE TITLE goes in quotation marks.
Example: In Slate.com’s article, “After-Birth Abortion: The Pro-Choice Case for Infanticide” author William Saletan outlines a horrifying possibility where pro-choice arguments about the lack of “personhood” of a fetus could also be applied to newborn infants. Saletan describes how certain philosophers have asserted that an infant has no more “personhood” than a late-term fetus due to its lack of neural development, and therefore has no more of a claim to life. Having no claim to life, the infant, if not desired by anyone, can be terminated with no moral quandary (2015).
Step Three: Find a direct quote that is an example of FACT.
Example: In Saletan’s article, he tells his readers that “An examination of 18 European registries reveals that between 2005 and 2009 only 64% of Down’s syndrome cases were diagnosed through prenatal testing. This percentage indicates that, considering only the European areas under examination, about 1700 infants were born with Down’s syndrome without parents being aware of it before birth” (2015). This quote is an example of fact because…
Step Four: Find a direct quote that is an example of OPINION.
Example: Saletan goes on to describe how philosophers Alberto Giublini and Francesa Minerva stated in the Journal of Medical Ethics: “Therefore, we claim that killing a newborn could be ethically permissible in all the circumstances where abortion would be. Such circumstances include cases where the newborn has the potential to have an (at least) acceptable life, but the well-being of the family is at risk” (2015). This quote is an example of opinion because…
Step Five: Find a direct quote that is an example of BELIEF.
Example: Later, in the same article in the Journal of Medical Ethics, Minerva and Giublini state that “Merely being human is not in itself a reason for ascribing someone a right to life” (as cited in Saletan, 2015). This quote is an example of belief because…
Step Six: CONCLUSION
REFERENCES: Using APA Style, list your article or articles on your References page. Use in-text citations for your quotes.
Expected length: 6-8 paragraphs but meeting the assignment requirements is more important.
Points: Content = 70 pts. Grammar = 20 points. APA Style = 10 pts (100 total).
Of the 70 points for content,
5 points for the introduction, 5 points for the conclusion: These should be on your topic, not on what fact, opinion, and belief are.
15 points for the article summary
15 (5/10) points for identifying a factual statement and explaining why it is factual (can it be verified, confirmed, corroborated? Or is it an objectively true fact?)
15 (5/10) points for identifying an opinion-based statement and explaining why it is an opinion (on what factual evidence is it based? Is there an exhortation? Is there another conceivable or realistic course of action. considering the evidence?)
15 (5/10) points for identifying a belief-based statement and explaining why it is a belief (it seems to be based on personal reasons rather than factual evidence. What could these reasons be?)

Module 4 Renaissance Discussion Board
Out of the ashes of the Plague a new Europe began to emerge and grow – one that stretched beyond its geographical borders to explore the entire globe by the end of the 16th century. Starting in Italy in the late 14th century, new ideas about art and science, expressed through literature, philosophy and music reflected the ideals of Classical Antiquity and established new cultural norms. What became known as The Renaissance in Europe was a period of growth, expansion and emergence of cultural identities that continue to resonate today.
For this article you will focus your research on something of interest to you from the Renaissance Splendor module spanning 1400 to 1625. You can always relate a historic topic to the present day, but make sure to be very specific about the connections and focus on the historic dress themes that you were studying in this module. This is a very dynamic time period that spans the beginning of the Renaissance in Italy in the late 14th-early 15th century and stretches to the end of the Elizabethan era of English dominance and the Age of European Exploration in the early 17th century. Class, gender, religious, identity and cultural norms that continue to this day were established in European/Western culture during this period. (Some great, some good, some terrible!)
At with module 3 I am going to get a little more picky about your sources, so make sure you are using reliable museum, library or database sources for your research and images. You should be able to distinguish primary research images from secondary ones. (Primary images are paintings, illustrations, sculpture, that were created during the period we are studying, and NOT re-drawings or illustrations done after the time period. Please also try to avoid movie, film or other popular media imagery UNLESS it is a supplemental research image. I just want you to find actual artwork from the periods to use for your research.) You should also be specific about terminology, and don’t forget to refer to the sources from the module that specifically sparked your research article topic. You should plan to set aside about 5 hours total to go through all of the material in the sub folders, and read the corresponding pages in the textbook. As always, I recommend doing this in several increments of time. This is all to help you choose one particular topic.

Module 4 Thread/Cloth and the Makers & Laborers
In Module 4 we are exploring the history of textile production and its important role in society, trade, commerce and labor rights. Throughout the history of humankind weaving and textile production have created work, trade and prosperity for those skilled enough to do this work, yet often this labor has been, and continues to be under-valued and exploited. The Industrial Revolution exacerbated issues of exploitation and capitalism created new mechanisms for labor abuse and wealth disparity. Today, after the Rana Plaza tragedy, new awareness and transparency have focused attention on the long-neglected issues around textile production, but much needs to be done globally to address the myriad problems facing the industry.
For this article you can focus on any time period, aspect of making textiles, labor issues, or global supply chain complexities. It will be interesting to see what you dig up. Some things to consider for this discussion board and I encourage you to explore any topics within these learning objectives that are of specific interest to you:
Understand the labor involved in making textiles, and the implications of our current consumer system on those laborers.
Appreciate different cultures in history, and the meaning of textiles and textile production in human evolution from ancient civilizations to the present.
Confront the consumer’s role in addressing labor issues and what can be done to promote fairness and equity across the world.
Please refer to specific readings and/or videos that sparked your interest and curiosity. Don’t forget to link to a Global Goal or Goals that are directly connected to your article topic.
